Course work; camera work

When we were filming our opening, we tried to use a wide variety of different camera angles and shots to create a good effect. Creating the different effects with the camera was hard, however when it comes to editing I think that the shots will look more effective because I will be able to change things such as the lighting and the continuity.

We started the film on an establishing shot of the location (a house), it was also a long shot; This is an example of the location and the place where we stood before filming this shot, I liked the angle and the shot because it shows the whole house and the surroundings. It shows that the opening will be set in this house and that somebody is watching/ spying on the location of the main character. When we filmed this scene we used the hand held camera effect, this represents the fact that somebody is walking to the house instead of just observing it. I feel like the hand held camera effect makes the audience feel more intense and on edge.
The weather on the day of filming also gave a good effect this is because it was raining, the sound of the rain made it more intense and represented the genre of the film.

We decided to use a shot of somebody ringing the doorbell, however when the door was opening nobody was there. The two shots of the house and the door bell shows a jump cut, this is effective because it shows the passing of time and represents that somebody has been watching the house for a long period of time.

The close up of the finger on the door bell shows a mans hand, stereo typically in films the villain is seen as a man, it shows that whatever is watching the house is a person and isn't supernatural, this full fills the movies genre e.g. thriller.

I feel like the first few clips of the film allows the audience to understand the basics of what is happening for example the house is being watched by somebody, it also shows that someone is possibly in danger.

The next clip cut to the boy going towards the door to answer it, to film these two shots we used two cameras to film it from two different angles, when editing this the continuity comes together well, we wasn't sure if this would work however it does and it shows where the boy is going/ what he is doing. The shot also wasn't to long and left a good effect on the audience.

These 3 shots show the boy looking at the cooker that has turned on unexpectedly, this is also known as an eye line cut. I think this is good because it shows what the boy is looking at, we also included a close up of the expression on the boys face to show how he was feeling at the time, it looks as if he is scared and worried about the situation, this then makes the audience feel uneasy. I feel pleased that our group has included this into the film opening, this is because it represents that something is wrong in the situation the boy is in.

This was one of my favorite shots because it is different, it shows him walking up the stairs from a strange angle, this makes the audience feel anxious and worried about what is going to happen. We stood on a part of the stairs that gave us this shot. Even though the quality of the camera work seems darker here, I think this is good because it feels like someone is watching him, it makes the atmosphere seem dark and mysterious.

In conclusion I feel like all of our camera work looked professional and good quality, the camera work is the main part of a film opening and therefore we wanted to make sure we got everything right by using a wide range of camera shots and angles.
