When researching into different thriller opening scenes, me and my group looked up similar films to what we have already researched for example The Ring and What Lies Beneath. We decided to watch the opening of Insidious. The first image that was represented was "A James Wan Film" this shows who produced the film and gives you an idea of what it might be about for example James Wan is famous for thriller and horror movies. It then cut to an actual scene as the opening of the film, however once the opening scene was over, the titles began to appear. This might be an idea we input in our thriller opening depending on the time limit. The name of the stars, producers, writers and most important people then appeared. I like how they used the colour red to represent fear and danger, it also looks good over the black/ dark coloured background. The titles where also shown over still images of the house, this was something we already planned to do in our thriller opening, it also has a good effect because the images are still visible as well as the titles. The font used may make the audience feel uneasy, it represents fear and shows the audience that the film will be tense and jumpy. Me and my group especially like the effect of how the writing dissolves in this opening scene. It fades away and makes the audience feel unsettled.
We also researched the openings of The Exorcist, Carrie and The Conjuring. We found that all these films fonts are very similar due to the genre of the films. Even though the researched films are more of the horror genre rather than thriller, I still feel like these openings have helped me in coming up with ideas for my font. The red font is also popular in many of these genre type films. We want the colour of our font to stand out and therefore we may use black and dark backgrounds to makes the titles/ font eye catching and scary for the audience.
I thought it would also be a good idea to research into the films I have reviewed e.g. What Lies Beneath and The Ring's fonts, this is because they are very similar to our film pitch and therefore there fonts may suit our film better.
This is the opening font to What Lies Beneath. During the opening credits, they didn't use many cuts, a lot of the transitions consisted of fades and dissolves, I think this is something I will include in my film opening, it creates an atmosphere before its even started.
Be very careful that the conventions you follow are thriller conventions not horror. They are very different in places and you need to be sure that you are following the correct conventions. You have linked the ideas here very well with the ideas you want to use in your films.
