Preliminary Task- Editing

Continuity/ transitions:

For our preliminary video we had to make sure (when editing) that the continuity was good and therefore we had to take extra precaution on editing the scenes together. This meant we had to edit the shots using the tools on iMovie. I found iMovie easy to use and therefore found the experience fun, everybody in the group took it in turns to edit which made it equal and therefore I was able to cover all aspects of editing.

It was hard to get the continuity right/ precise in our short film, for example our group found it hard to edit the door scene together, however when we have more experience in filming and editing we can improve this in our coursework opening.

Most of our transitions were cuts from scene to scene instead of different transitions e.g. fade, this is so that the entire clip had continuity. It showed that the film was set in one place instead of different locations. However some clips required transitions for example;

This was a fade from the title to the first scene, we felt like this required this transition because it shows that the film is about to start/ it sets the scene. It also makes the clip more interesting for the audience instead of cuts throughout the entire film.

We also used a transition between the clip where Caitlin sits down to the shot reverse shot, we felt like this part of the film didn't flow/ have continuity and therefore added a transition to make it more effective.

Here is an example of the transition we used;

However we still felt that these two clips didn't match very well and therefore when it comes to my course work I will try to improve on this. I feel like the transitions between the shot reverse shot flow very well, they are in time and have match on action, this is because it gives the effect of a real conversation. We also kept the 180 degree rule when taking these shots and therefore could edit the clips properly.

Sound:

When adding music and sound to our short film we were unsure of what type of music would fit in well with the theme of the film and therefore didn't have too much sound. For example we added in the sound of a school bell, this shows that the film is set in a school.

At the beginning of the film we added the song Rather Be. We found that the song was happy and fitted in with the emotion of the characters, however we also found that the song choice could of been better, however it was the only music on garage band (the music tool) that we could find at the time, this is something I will look in to e.g. find more music that might be suitable for our thriller opening. We made the music fade out when Caitlin sits down to have the conversation, we did this because if the music was over the conversation it could of been confusing for the audience. The music then starts again when the credits role to show that it was over.

However when it comes to my thriller coursework, I will make sure that the music fits in with the scenes and the clips. We didn't have a lot of music choice on our Apple mac, however we will be able to create our own music in Garageband for our thriller coursework which will make it more effective.

Titles and Credits:

The final element of editing that I used was the title and credit pages. The title page had the name of our short film on, we decided to use a themed title page, it looks similar to a notebook and emphasis the fact that location is a school.

Here is an example of the title page;

This is effective because it doesn't give much away about the film and makes you want to keep watching to see what will happen. However I could of made the title bigger and bolder this may have given a better effect.

In addition we added credits at the end of our film, this was to show the audience that the short film had ended. It also allows you to see who stared in the film e.g. the actors and also the directors, camera person etc.

Here is an example of our credits;

The credits background is bold and effective, it also makes the audience interested in whats on the screen, I think this is a good way to end the preliminary task.

In conclusion, I feel like the editing overall has been extremely helpful, I think that this task will help me when I come to edit my thriller coursework, this is due to the fact I now understand how to edit and the different things I can do with iMovie and Garage Band.
